Driving an electric car in Boston, now with less pain

Boston Overdrive -- In April last year, my neighbors thought I'd burn the building down while charging one of the first Nissan Leaf electric cars. Outside of the Charles Hotel parking garage in Cambridge, there were exactly zero public charging stations in the Boston area. It was cold, which meant the batteries had even less capacity than they normally do. I almost got stranded on my way to work. It was bad.

Now, after a week with a 2012 Nissan Leaf (base price $36,050), it's comparatively peachy to drive an EV here. Boston installed three public stations outside City Hall a month after my first test drive, and in October, Brookline placed two charging stations in Coolidge Corner, less than a mile away from my condo. The Boston Globe even has a high-voltage charging station, though it's not for public use.

If I could afford one, I'd strongly consider. 1 kWh = 10 cents, 1 gallon of regular unleaded (current average) $3.09. That's 31 kWh.

The cost of the car does not justify the possible savings in gas. EV's are just a product for a niche market.

That's fine if you have the money to buy one in the first place, and don't mind walking "less than a mile" from home to where you left your car plugged in to charge.

The cost of that car alone would be unbearably more, not less pain, in my wallet!

These things just take time to get infrastructure going. Not sure plug-ins are the best as something still needs to generate electricity, but the point is infrastructure is not overnight.

Don't sit directly on the battteries & you won't have pain driving!!! Of course, chargers are going to roll in but still awhile off before I'd take one for a roadtrip. I like the Euro. idea of having a built for it trailer to charge an EV to allow such extended trips - believe it was Volvo. You just wouldn't want to buy the whole unit.

Interesting to read a "been there, done that" regarding the Nissan Leaf. I'd been wondering how convenient they were to own.

Oh, and thank you for the "nursing notes"...

To much $$$, have to buy electricity to recharge, recharging takes a long time and I wouldn't want to be in one when it gets hit by a German Shepard. The dog will walk away and the people will go to the hospital or morg.

I hope it's easier to find a charging station than it is to find a handicapped parking place at the grocery store on Saturday afternoon.

I just don't understand this thinking that the money is there to buy these "affordable" cars. Sure, okay, you make the argument that you spend the money now in order to reap the benefits of saving the money on gas later. But what am I going to do about the money needed NOW to pay for a car that will supposedly benefit me later. Am I taking out a loan? Is there a new gov't program that I am not aware of? Are there any grants?

Not to mention, let's say that I do get this car and I'm making payments on the principle and the interest of a loan that I would get. What happens when a part for these newer cars goes and I have to shell out more money for said part? Now, I'm even more in the hole and it's going to take that much longer to break out of it. The point is that, for the time being, it makes much more monetary sense to stick with the car I have had and am familiar with.

I am sitting in a Starbucks in Baltimore, surrounded by many people who drove their gas powered cars to get away from their homes (400,000 homes without electric power in Baltimore area today). If they drove all-electric cars many would be stuck at home, completely powerless and grounded.
