Most of the price is Tax. Speculators have nothing to do with tax.

The Bakken formation does have a lot of oil but becaue it is in shale it is hard to extract and only about 1 percent of it is recoverable. Though they have increased prodution to 458,000 barrels per day I would not count on them to increase it much beyond that. The problem is that there isn't enough oil. The problem is bringing it to the surface in a safe and economically feasable manner.

Proven oil reserves peak in this country in 1971 and have been on a steady decline since and now are about half of what they were then. With some of the new finds lately in the gulf, bakken etc. we might be able to keep those numbers from declining for awhile but we'll never see them go back to what they were in 1971.

Production which is more important then reserves peaked in late 1970 at over 10million barrel per day. It is now about 5.6 million barrels per day which is actually up a little the last couple years. Of coures it no mystery why production has increased the price of oil has increased. If the price were to fall to $40/barrel production would decline once again. One has to remember that there are x amount of $25, $50, $100, $150, $200 barrel oil out there. As the price goes up the amount of oil in the ground that can and will be extracted goes up.

I don't see us having 100 years of $50 or even $100 oil. WE might have 100 years of $500 oil but I doubt that as well.

One thing you can count on is that unless we lower our oil consumption we will be at the mercy of the rest of the world for at least 50 percent of our petroleum. Right now we import about 60 percent.

The problem with suspending gasoline taxes is that the roads still need to be maintained, and if people who drive cars and trucks aren't going to pay to maintain them, who will?

Fuel and other vehicle taxes should be set at a level sufficient to pay for the roads and clean-up costs associated with them, so the burden does not fall into income, property, or other taxes.

And, yes, as a bicyclist I include bicycles as a "vehicle", charge me commensurate with the amount of wear-and-tear I place on the roads, give me a license plate, and let it be known that I'm a fully-recognized road vehicle who pays my share along with everyone else.

A friend of mine stationed in Kuwait just wrote me a letter explaining how Kuwait is paying their population $1400 USD per month to do nothing. They can fill their cars for $10 and still show a $400B profit. Guess who's paying for that?

If the federal govt. really wanted to do any thing about the rising cost of gas all they would have to do is freeze the gas price at areasonable amt. we all know the govt. can do any thing they wont too.

Lablib, follow your own advice and do some reading. The internet is a good source, Look up the Bakken formation. It is the largest oil discovery in the world. If you go further and look at the history of estimated oil reserves, you will see that rather than going down over the years, they have continuously increased. Fifty years ago, it was estimated that we had only enough oil to last for another ten to fifteen years. Today we have enough to last for 100 years. Ive no doubt that in fifty years from now, there will be still more oil found. Also, twenty years ago, we imported only about 30% of our oil. Today we import almost 90%. And we buy it from countries that would like to see America destroyed. We are funding our enemies. There is no reason we can't be energy independent.

As someone here said Obama's plan is clear. $5 a gallon. It's clear because he said it. People wanting the government to do anything to ease this burden are wasting their time. This is exactly what this government wants.

Lablib that 100 year estimate seems to be pretty legit from what I've read. But that's at the rate we're pumping now. Pulling it out sooner would certainly diminish the number somewhat.

I can't argue with the rest, especially the part about not driving so far or aggressively. I'd add to it, stop driving your gas hogs! Ditch the SUV and the Hemi and the jacked up 4x4 pickemup trucks.

You don't need a Smart Car (they're not even very good at getting good mileage!) but you can double your mpgs by simply getting a sedan or minivan in some cases.

Wow no wonder nothing ever gets better in this country! Turn off the TV and do some reading people. Stopped parroting (fillin radio/tv personality).

More Refineries - We don't need more refineries we are only operating at 80% right now and there is more refinery capacity in the US coming online soon.

Suspend gas taxes - This would only lead to higher demand which would lead to even higher prices and less government revenue which is the last thing we need right now

Blame it on Politicians - Yeah this is really going to solve things because when the "other party" was in power everything was great. Look in the mirror if you want to blame someone.

Let them drill here - They are drilling here. Currently we are in a drilling boom in this country. There hasn't been this much drilling activity since early 80's. We only have 2% of the worlds oil reserves yet we use 25% of the oil. You do the the math. Not sure what some was thinking when they posted that we have 100 years of oil reserves. Not even close.

Speculators - If we didn't have the tight demand/supply issue speculators wouldn't make a difference. The main problem is we use to much gasoline.

NOW FOR THE CORRECT ANSWER

Slow the hell down and stop driving like a teenager! If everyone in this country would just slow down we could save 1/2 to 1 million barrels of gasoline per day. This would be huge and prices would fall. Kind of like price our doing right now that demand has weaken because of $4/gal gasoline.

Oilbird, and all that are so optimistic...
Any excise taxes collected from gas is put in to specific funds...they are used primarily for what that fund is designated for ..... the 'Gov' is not just sitting back taking in your money...besides it is a minimal amount. You would still be paying well over $3.25 a gal of gas even if all the taxes were removed. Think about that!

Reducing speed to 90km/hr from 110km/hr increases the gas mileage in our van from 22mpg to 29mpg. Now if everyone consumed less fuel by this method fuel storage should increase and push prices down temporarily until the oil refineries cut back and push prices back up. so were screwed no matter what. Only way to get ahead is invest in the companies that take your money.

Disappointed it wasn't an option on the poll but I think some government incentives to build more refineries would be beneficial. There is plenty of oil but we just lack sufficient refining capacity.

I say suspend all taxes on gas, give tax breaks to the big greedy oil companies that take a loss on anything that goes above a certain dollar amount, and release the reserves. I have 3 step children that live in another state that we drive back and forth to get. Flying is almost cheaper.

Nobody complained about the 'speculators' when the price of gasoline went DOWN to $1.60 in January, 2009. Same speculators, same interests on their part to match suppliers with users.

Gee, you think it might be something other than greedy speculators? NAH. At least that's what Obama and company would prefer that you concentrate on, so that you don't look too closely at how they have screwed up access and utilization of ALL fossil fuels.

Any element of the tax that is related to price should be removed;- i.e HST as there is no incentive for the government to get involved as long as prices continue to rise;- the government just collects more money.

Get the people to realize that global warming is a fraud, and stop the EPA from further regulations. Government is not the solution but the problem. However there is one thing they can do that lowered gas prices 20% the last time it was used. Release gas from the strategic reserves!
Then drill in the untapped reserves in this country, Alaska, North Dakota, and Utah. We have 100 years of oil reserves there. Then get the EPA off the backs of the oil companies so they can build new refineries. There is no reason we should have to import ANY oil. There is no reason we should have to pay more than $2.50 per gallon.
Any one who wants to lower the speed limit to 55 again should have to drive across Wyoming at 55 MPH on Interstate 80.
