"and how much energy does it take to make ethanol? what is the overall savings or are we adding to the problem?" It takes more energy to grow, fertilize, produce, transport it, etc., than if we didn't use it. Plus, they use corn predominantly today. There ARE other sources which require less energy to get it to market, increase the yield or amount of it, and make it less expensive to boot, which would be good all the way around, but just like we could have already have vehicles on the road already for 10 years or more that get 70 to 150+ mpg, and even more now today, they won't do things the right way.
